‘Bendgate’ and iOS 8 bugs do little to threaten Apple’s reign: iPhone 6 is already UK’s number one mobile phone

  • September has been a triumph for Apple with the iPhone 6 flying straight into the charts at number one and the iPhone 6 Plus in 5th position

  • Apple now monopolises the top three positions for the first time in over a year, forcing the Samsung Galaxy S5 into 4th place

  • The Samsung Galaxy Note 3, S4 Mini and the Sony Xperia Z2 drop out the charts to make way for the new iPhones

  • The HTC M8 One has been demoted from 4th to 7th place.

In spite of a kerfuffle over the stunt that saw U2’s album being uploaded to every iPhone, reports the iPhone 6 could bend in a pocket, and anger at iOS 8 being riddled by bugs, Apple has enjoyed considerable victory in the sales stakes. According to the Uswitch.com Mobile Tracker, which is based on live searches, pre-orders and sales, the iPhone 6 is already the UK’s most popular phone, while the iPhone 6 Plus comes in at 5th place.

For the first time since August 2013, Apple now dominates the top three places in the mobile chart, with the 5S and 5C claiming 2nd and 3rd places respectively. This has forced the Samsung Galaxy S5 into 4th place. The success doesn’t end there – iOS devices now occupy five out of the top six spots.

Android brands alike have suffered the consequences of Apple’s popularity. The HTC One M8 has been demoted three places in just one month. In August the device was the biggest riser, moving from 6th place to 4th. September’s arrival of the iPhone 6 Plus, however, has done much to knock this success, leaving the HTC device lagging behind in 7th place. Meanwhile, the Samsung Galaxy Note 3, S4 Mini and the Sony Xperia Z2 have dropped out the top 10 altogether to make way for the new iPhones.

The Samsung Galaxy S5 is down one place, and the S4 is down two. Not only has Samsung been pushed out of the top three for the first time in a year, but only three Samsung handsets occupy positions in the top ten. By comparison, five of Apple’s handsets appear in the top 10 for September.

However, it’s not all bad news for Samsung. The S3 has reappeared in the chart to reclaim 10th place for the first time since June. The Galaxy S3 is now two years old, but its ultra-low price – £15 per month including a ‘free’ handset – has helped it become a long-standing favourite.

Number one handset – Apple’s newest release, the iPhone 6, goes straight in at first place the same month it’s released

Biggest winner – Apple’s iPhone 6 has flown straight to number one, while the iPhone 6 Plus is in 5th place

Biggest losers – the Samsung Galaxy Note 3, S4 Mini and the Sony Xperia Z2 have dropped out of the top 10 chart

Ernest Doku, telecoms expert at Uswitch.com, says: “Even bugs in their new operating system couldn’t keep Apple from a characteristic triumph with the release of their latest handsets.

“As usual, the hype surrounding brand Apple has helped the mobile-maker to a successful September. However, there’s no denying that a catalogue of errors has aroused a backlash, which won’t be forgotten overnight.

“The real question is, now the early adopters have bought their devices, will the popularity of Apple’s new phones endure? The real test of these devices is yet to come, when the initial frenzy has died down.”
