Uswitch comments on EU roaming caps on wholesale charges

Commenting on a new deal made in the European Parliament which caps wholesale roaming charges for operators, paving the way towards the end of EU roaming charges, Ernest Doku, telecoms expert at Uswitch.com, says: “It’s heartening news, but we’re one step closer to the end of roaming charges in the EU just as the UK is making its preparations to leave. As such, it remains to be seen if Britain truly stands to benefit from this provisional deal.

“Price caps have insulated against billshock from using a mobile whilst abroad in EU countries for some, whilst protection also exists in the form of specific tariffs including Three’s ‘Feel At Home’ and iD Mobile’s ‘Takeaway’. These packages already allow roaming at no extra charge both in numerous European destinations and further afield, including the USA and Australia.

“However, over a quarter (27%) of UK mobile users incorrectly believe that it currently doesn’t cost extra to use a mobile in other EU countries – which suggests all the to-ing and fro-ing in Brussels has caused some confusion.

“Of course, the European Commission’s caps don’t protect anyone travelling outside the EU. This is where mobile networks need to urgently focus their attentions next, as the fear of sky-high roaming bills further afield certainly isn’t an irrational one. More than one in ten (11%) customers who’ve been outside the EU in the past year have received a higher than normal bill – averaging £103.

“What this underlines is that mobile users using handsets abroad should always check their network’s roaming charges for their destination country before they travel – and see if there’s a bundle or add-on that could limit the cost.

“Other advice whilst overseas includes using free Wi-Fi and messaging apps to stay in touch with friends and family, switch your roaming setting off to avoid any accidental charges, and consider buying a local SIM to put in your phone.”
