Energy bills could rise up to £436 as popular fixed deals end

  • 13 popular fixed deals from seven energy suppliers are set to end on 31 May [1]

  • Households could see a bill price hike of up to £436 – an eye watering 60% – if they don’t opt for a better deal [1]

  • Average increase for customers with fixed deals ending this month will be £289 a year [1]

Over a hundred thousand households on popular fixed energy deals coming to an end this month face price hikes of up to £436 – an eye watering 60% a year – according to Uswitch.com, the price comparison and switching service[1].

Seven suppliers have 13 popular fixed deals expiring on 31 May, after which their customers could be rolled onto expensive standard variable tariffs[1]. If they take no action, the customers facing the biggest hikes are those with EDF Energy (£436), First Utility (£392) and ScottishPower (£373)[1]. The average increase these customers are facing is a whopping £289 per year.

Ofgem’s rules allow customers to switch suppliers without paying exit fees 42 days before their plan end date[2], so consumers on these tariffs are free to shop around now, and find a cheaper deal in minutes, without fear of being charged any exit penalties.

Claire Osborne, Uswitch.com energy expert, says: “If your fixed deal ends this month and you do nothing, you’ll suddenly find yourself paying more money for the same energy.

“With so many cheap deals coming to an end, my message to energy customers is to check if you are already on an expensive standard tariff or are one of the hundred thousand households facing an automatic roll over onto one soon.

“You can switch online or on the phone now without incurring any exit fees, and in just a few minutes you will have saved an average of £357 and protected yourself against further price hikes.”
