Flexibility for football fans key as BT and Sky announce opening televised Premier League fixures

Commenting on the announcement of the televised Premier League matches for the first two months of the 2018-19 season, Dani Warner, TV expert at Uswitch.com, says: “It is perfect timing for the UK’s broadcasters to be announcing the televised fixtures for the first two months of the upcoming Premier League season, with World Cup fever gripping the nation and the prospect that football could be coming home.

“The inevitable excitement, however, is tempered by the confusion over finding the best way to watch your team’s matches, with Sky Sports and BT Sport once again splitting the fixtures between them.

“While Sky Sports retains the lion’s share of televised games, Chelsea fans, for example, may feel that BT Sport is a tempting prospect, with two of their biggest games of the season – at home to both Arsenal and Liverpool – among BT’s first block of matches.

Sky Sports will show 23 live Premier League fixtures in August and September, including the season’s opener at Old Trafford, where Manchester United take on Leicester City, as well as Tottenham’s first match in their new stadium against Liverpool, on September 15.

“The good news is that BT and Sky do give viewers a nice degree of flexibility – meaning that if you’re a casual fan, you don’t have to sign up to a restrictive 18 month contract to watch some football, or bank on your team’s matches being on one particular service.

“More dedicated fans might find it advantageous to sign up for a long term deal but if you want to drop in and out of certain games, NOW TV offers daily, weekly and monthly Sky Sports passes starting from £7.99 for day access.

“Then again, current Sky subscribers could add Sky Sports to their current TV package from £18 extra per month if they’re only after Premier League matches or £20 per month if they want access to every Sky Sports channel.

“There are two main ways of accessing BT Sport if you don’t have BT broadband – by getting a BT Sport add-on for your existing TV package – from £27.99 a month, plus an activation fee – or by adding the BT Sport app. It’s worth noting that the app is only available to certain broadband or mobile customers.

“Ultimately, while it doesn’t always work in the favour of fans to have to pick and choose between the two rival broadcasters, the flexibility should allow followers to tune in to their choice of matches.”
