Huawei Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro: five things you need to know

We take a closer look at Huawei’s latest handsets.

Huawei's Mate 10 and 10 Pro team impressive dual-lens cameras with an attractive design and intuitive artificial intelligence. And all for a very competitive price.

Read on and we’ll tell you five things you need to know about the Huawei Mate 10 and 10 Pro.

1) All-new design

The Mate 10 Pro has a crisp full-view display with only minimal bezels (edges). It comes with a 18:9 aspect ratio, which makes it twice as long as it is wide. So it’s tall and slim, making it perfect for multitasking and watching videos online.

It also means that it can now fit a 6-inch AMOLED screen without making the phone itself any larger than last year’s model.

The smaller Mate 10 has more traditional dimensions. With an aspect ratio of 16:9, it definitely feels shorter and dumpier than its big brother. But if you’ve got small hands then you might find this one easier to use.

Both phones come with a curved glass back, which makes them look and feel premium. And both devices are available in midnight blue, titanium grey and mocha brown colourways.

2) Intelligent dual-lens camera

As with any flagship Huawei phone, the camera is sure to be the main selling point. And with not one, not two, but three lenses, the Mate 10 series promises to be Huawei’s best cameraphone yet.

Continuing its successful partnership with Leica, Huawei has collaborated with the world-famous camera company to give both the Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro an impressive 20-megapixel mono-lens paired with a regular 12-megapixel shooter in addition to the 8-megapixel selfie camera.

This will give your photos bags of depth and detail, even in poor lighting conditions.

The dual-lens setup also allows you the option of taking stylish ‘bokeh’ shots that artfully blur the background while bringing the subject of the photo into razor-sharp focus.

As if that wasn’t good enough, the camera uses artificial intelligence to adjust the settings for you, depending on what you’re trying to photograph.

It can identify the difference between a bright sunny day and a dusky sunset, for example, and alter the light levels accordingly.

It can also activate the many different modes automatically by identifying subject of your photo. So, if you’re taking a photo of all your mates, it’ll activate the Group Photo mode.

Instagramming your latest culinary creation? It’ll switch on Food mode. Or if you’re trying to capture your cat’s cuteness using the camera, it’ll start using the Pet mode for you.

In short, it’ll make you look like a photography pro without you going to any effort whatsoever.

3) Artificial intelligence

And it’s not just the camera that comes with intuitive tech. With the tagline “Not just a smartphone”, the Mate 10 series promises to be the smartest and most efficient Huawei handset yet.

Although the artificial intelligence seems to be mostly there to help you take perfect photos, there are a couple of other features designed to help you get the most out of your phone without you having to faff about in the settings.

Our personal favourite automatically adjusts the volume on your calls. So, if you’re phoning someone from a busy shopping centre, for example, it will make sure you can hear and be heard over the noise.

Or if you’re trying to discreetly answer your phone in the middle of a work presentation or, worse, date night, you can whisper into the phone and the person on the other end will be able to hear you loud and clear.

4) Bigger battery with super-fast, super-safe charging

Both the Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro come with a huge, 4,000mAh battery which Huawei claims will get you through 2 days of heavy smartphone usage on a single charge.

And when you do need to boost your battery, the Supercharge mode promises to give you 58% charge in 30 minutes.

Even better, the Mate 10 series is the first smartphone to be awarded the TUV Rheinland certification for safe fast charging. So you can give your phone a super-quick charge without worrying about your phone or your charger overheating.

5) Pricing and availability
