Sony Ericsson is joining the ranks of mobile phone companies offering Android handsets, with a release date pencilled in for summer 2009.
The plan to issue a phone was revealed by Garfield Brusewitz of Sony Ericsson in an interview with the Swedish website IDG.se.
He told the site: "The first Android phone from Sony Ericsson is expected to show up for the summer."
The company’s spokesperson added that although the company will initially focus on incorporating Android on “products in the higher segment”, it plans to add to its range later on with ones aimed at the “broad mass market”.
Unconfirmed rumours suggest that Sony Ericsson will employ Android in a handset in its Xperia range. The X1, in this selection, is powered by Windows Mobile.
News of Sony Ericsson’s entry into the Android market comes as rival manufacturers are also gearing up to release handsets.
These include LG, Motorola, Samsung and HTC.
