Research in Motion (RIM) has recently shipped its 50 millionth BlackBerry, it has been announced.
The company attained the milestone during January, some ten years after it produced its first BlackBerry.
RIM also confirmed that it has also attained 21 million active BlackBerry subscribers across the globe and that the company’s won infrastructure is processing 3 petabyes of traffic every month.
News of the company’s achievements comes as it was recently confirmed that UK consumers are to be offered a BlackBerry on a pay as you go contract for the first time ever.
Under the terms of the new offer, customers would pay £145 for the BlackBerry Pearl 8120 and top up the phone on an ad-hoc basis.
Prior to this BlackBerrys were solely available on costly contracts and were largely only affordable for business users.
However, making the phone available on pay as you go is expected to broaden its popularity with the consumer market.
