Orange customers in the UK and France can now browse through and download applications for their mobile phones directly from the newly-launched App Shop.
The App Shop will be accessible to more than one million Orange customers in the two nations and it is expected that in excess of 5000 items will be available from the App Shop when it opens its virtual doors.
Many of these initial 5000 downloadable goodies will not be applications in the modern sense, but will in fact include items such as wallpapers and ringtones.
The number of software applications with practical functions that will be available from the App Shop is as yet unknown, but in the initial phase it is expected to be a relatively small percentage.
There is also limited information pertaining to the mobile phones that will be compatible with the App Shop service, although it is believed that the Nokia 6700 and the Sony Ericsson W995 will be the first handsets to benefit.
Orange is expected to roll out its App Shop service across further models next year.
