Sony Ericsson’s (SE) upcoming games console and smartphone hybrid, the Xperia Play, will be launching in the UK at the end of this month, it has been confirmed.
The hotly anticipated kit, which was officially unveiled at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona last month after months of leaks and speculations surrounding its existence, will be hitting store shelves on the 31st and have six games out of the box.
A further 50 titles will be available after launch through the PlayStation Suite app. These will be a mixture of PSone classics and smartphone titles optimised for the Play’s special features.
Although final details are still being straightened out, SE assures us that almost all the major mobile operators and vendors are on board for the launch and that there will be a marketing push for the Play unlike anything before.
Speaking to MVC, Sony Ericsson marketing director for UK and Ireland David Hilton, said: “We are currently still in commercial conversation, but I’d be surprised if we didn’t see Xperia Play appear in other channels,”
“All the mobile operators and retailers are selling it. It is rare these days to get a product that is sold everywhere, but this is one of those.
“This will be the biggest marketing campaign we have had in the UK.”
Features of the Xperia Play include a 1GHz Snapdragon processor with an Adreno GPU, a four-inch touchscreen panel and a slide-out game pad that houses the time-honoured PlayStation buttons, plus a five-megapixel snapper.
The games available preinstalled are Bruce Lee Dragon Warriors, Tetris, Star Battalion, Crash Bandicoot, FIFA 10 and The Sims 3.
We got a chance to handle the Play at SE’s launch party, and though we weren’t mightily impressed by the games, which were basically rehashed versions of existing smartphone titles, we saw potential in it to become a great gaming device provided there’s proper software support for it after launch and PlayStation Suite could do just that.
Keep your eyes peeled for more news regarding the Xperia Play in the coming weeks.
