Sony Xperia Z2 smartphone and tablet land at MWC 2014

Sony has unveiled its first fresh products of 2014 at Mobile World Congress (MWC), as it bids to make good on its recent renaissance in the smartphone sector.

Sporting a 5.2-inch Triluminous screen, the 4G-capable Sony Xperia Z2 handset is slightly larger than its forbear but retains the Z1’s standout 20.7-megapixel camera and water-resistant properties.

However, this time around Sony has augmented its imaging smarts with 4K video recording. That means you can capture footage that’s four times higher-res than HD.

Sound gets a makeover too, thanks to noise-cancelling tech. And in a sop to smartphone users irked by the perennial problem of disappointing battery life, there's a long-life battery.

As you might expect with a new phone, the Z2 runs the latest Android 4.4.2 (KitKat) software out of the box and features Qualcomm’s new, powerful Snapdragon 801 quad-core processor and 16GB of onboard storage. All of which has been squeezed into a frame that’s 0.3mm thinner than the Z1.

Also new to Sony's range is a tablet that shares the 'Z2' name. It’s waterproof too. But the device’s chief selling point is surely that at 6.9mm thick, it's the ‘world’s thinnest slate’.

It's also 70 grams lighter than the Z1 tablet, features a quad-core 2.3GHz Snapdragon 901 processor and packs a 10.1-inch screen with the same Bravia technology as Sony TVs and Android 4.4.2.

We’ll be bringing you some hands-on videos of the latest Sony offerings direct from MWC 2014 later on today.
