The Sony Xperia XZ Premium was named the Best New Smartphone at the MWC 2017 Glomo awards yesterday, fending off competition from flagship devices by LG, Huawei and Motorola.
In a week where the latest in smartphone tech was somewhat overshadowed by the return of retro feature phone, the Nokia 3310, it was encouraging to see a high-end smartphone walk away with the gong for best device.
And with stunning camera features, 4K video playback and a strong yet sleek design, the Xperia XZ Premium is certainly a worthy winner.
Given that sophisticated cameras are seen as a standard feature of the modern smartphone, phone makers are struggling to offer Instagrammers and YouTubers something different.
Sony claims that the Xperia XZ Premium is the first smartphone ever to offer super slow-mo video recording. This means it can at a staggering 960 frames per second, which allows it to capture details that would be lost on the human eye.
On top of this, the XZ Premium has a sharp 19-megapixel camera that’s capable of detailed shots in low-light conditions and the option of watching 4K Ultra-HD video playback.
The highly reflective handset is dust and waterproof and has a Gorilla Glass 5 display that can survive being dropped without cracking.
The XZ Premium also has an impressive battery life with some smart tech that tells you how much power you have left based on your average usage. It utilises adaptive charging too, so it will boost your battery without wearing it out over time.
uSwitch telecoms expert and Glomo judge, Ernest Doku, said: , “Sony's strengths in the fields of imaging and television seem to have finally come together to make for a feature-rich, compelling device amongst impressive yet incremental announcements at this year's Mobile World Congress.”

Elsewhere, Samsung won the award for the Best Smartphone of 2016 with the Galaxy S7 Edge. The disaster that befell the Note 7 clearly wasn’t enough to detract from Samsung’s 2016 flagship phone and with good reason.
The device was praised for its edge-to-edge display, impressive battery life and superb camera.
Ernest Doku said, “The Galaxy S7 Edge has truly been Samsung's success story for 2016, leveraging sleek looks and peerless Android integration in an appealing package. Despite a competitive field, that phone in particular stole a march on the competition in a meaningful way, and as such was a deserved winner amongst a strong pack of handsets.”
