Huawei has lifted the lid on the mid-range P smart, with a feature set that takes in an impressive-sounding dual lens camera, a large Full HD, edge-to-edge screen and the latest Android software. And all from £17 per month on monthly contracts.
It’s the camera, which Huawei claims offers “amazing depth and stunning colour”, that sounds like the standout, though.
Not least because dual-lens cameras are usually the preserve of higher-end smartphones.
By teaming 13-megapixel lens with a two-megapixel lens, the P smart’s camera will be able to capture what photography enthusiasts call ‘bokeh’ shots.
That means the user can blur out the background, while bringing the subject of the photo into ultra-sharp focus.
Although useful for still-life style snaps or to give seasonal shots an atmospheric gauze, it’s an effect that really comes into its own when shooting portraits.
Perhaps more impressively, the P smart’s secondary camera offers the same feature. Which should mean you can take selfies that really ‘pop’ too.
The 5.6-inch, 18:9 aspect ratio Full HD display is a welcome surprise for a phone at this price point.
Like Samsung's Galaxy Note 8 and LG’s G6, it’s equipped with a split-screen option for multi-tasking that allows you to keep two apps open at the same time. Or watch a video in one window, while checking your email in the other.
Powered by the up-to-the-minute Oreo version of the Android operating system, the P smart also features a fingerprint scanner to keep your details away from villains and authenticate purchases.
A 3,000 mAh battery keeps things ticking over, along with 32GB of internal storage (expandable by up to 256GB by adding a microSD card).
Huawei’s latest effort is on sale now and is exclusive to Vodafone for one month.
At the time of writing, SIM-free pricing isn’t apparent. But Vodafone is offering the P smart from £17 per month, with £9 to pay upfront.
For heavy data users, there’s a £27 per month option, which includes a whopping 16GB per month usage allowance.
