Ernest Doku, broadband expert at Uswitch.com, comments on giffgaff entering the broadband market:

“giffgaff’s entry into the broadband market could be exciting news for consumers looking for an alternative to the bigger players. The new product will run off the established network, Nexfibre’s, infrastructure, which is currently only used by Virgin Media O2.

“While giffgaff’s full fibre broadband is only being offered on a trial basis at the moment, working directly with consumers to test its new service as ‘co-creators’ is a good way of showing its commitment to ‘building a better broadband’.

“giffgaff is offering the first customers to try the new product 500Mbps broadband for £10 a month - a significant discount compared to how much you would ordinarily pay for a package with this speed. Customers who give feedback will also be able to receive a £100 incentive.

“The real test will be what kind of pricing that giffgaff - long known as a value player and winner of Uswitch’s ‘Network of the Year’ in 2025 - will be offering to consumers as this product becomes more widely available.

“While there is no further detail on when giffgaff’s broadband will fully roll out, if you’re out of contract and looking to save some money on your broadband, it could be worth registering your interest to see if you could take part in the trial.

“If you don’t end up being eligible, or the trial format isn’t for you, there are still several smaller, regional broadband providers that also act as challenger brands to the larger providers. These full-fibre providers, such as Trooli, Hyperoptic and Youfibre, often offer faster speeds at lower prices and many don’t raise their prices mid-contract.”
