Motorola Xoom 2 and Xoom Media Android tablets announced

Motorola has officially announced two new additions to its hitherto solo Android tablet effort, the Xoom, landing soon in our fair isles later this month.

The hotly awaited successor to the first-ever Honeycomb powered slate will come in two flavours, the Xoom 2 and the multimedia-focussed Xoom 2 Media Edition and will hit store shelves in UK and Ireland in mid-November.

Sporting a 10.1-inch scratch resistant Gorilla Glass screen and Moto’s all-new SplashGuard coating which protects it from liquid damage, the Xoom 2 is the bigger of two devices and arguably the most stylish Android tablet we’ve laid our eyes on yet.

With stylish slants around edges and an ultra-slim body that measures just 8.8mm thin, it instantly catches the eye. And it’s just as impressive on the inside, packing a dual core 1.2GHz processor with 1GB of RAM, more than ten hours of battery life and 16GB of internal storage.

Also on board is a five-megapixel camera and a front-facing 1.3-megapixel webcam, making it a pretty solid contender in the photos and videos department.

The Motorola Xoom 2 Media Edition is a similar proposition, boasting near identical specs as the regular Xoom 2, except that it comes with a smaller 8.2-inch screen, presumably to make it more portable. It also rocks a much wider viewing angle, which should be a boon for multimedia enthusiasts.

Pricing details have yet to be unveiled but rumours suggest it will cost in the region of €399 for the unlocked Wi-Fi edition (approx. £345).

It also appears the tablets will launch with the Honeycomb iteration of Android rather than the upcoming Ice Cream Sandwich. But we expect an update to follow eventually.

Carphone Warehouse has already been confirmed as a launch partner and will be taking pre-orders shortly. Stay tuned for further announcements in the weeks to come.
