Around half of all homes and businesses in the UK now have access to faster broadband thanks to BT, it has been revealed.

The company's Wholesale Broadband Connect service, which offers connection speeds of up to 24Mb, is now believed to be available to over 730 telephone exchanges across the UK.

It is hoped that the technology will be available to around 14 million people by the end of March 2010, while 20 million could have access by spring next year.

Sian Baldwin, Director of Broadband and Content Services at BT Wholesale, said 20,000 to 30,000 sites are being given access to the network every week.

She added that the technology can support "growing demand for high-speed access to a range of online services, including television, gaming and multiple voice over internet protocol (VoIP) services".

Last month, BT announced the launch of its Infinity fibre-optic broadband service, which offers connection speeds of up to 40Mb.

I see lots of adverts for BT touting up to 20 meg download speeds, but I only get 1.5-2Mb. I live in Harlow in Essex, a town of 80,000 people, which is only 17 miles from London.

When is BT going to improve the service for customers who pay the same fees, but get an inferior service?

The same can be said for them all. Virgin state 50mb (but in the small print it reveals that's only if in a cable area). TalkTalk state 24mb, but then have same issue as BT. That is that the length from exchange affects speeds, so that you may get a speed as low as 1Mb.

I'm with AOL. Universal speed checks state I should get 0.5. I luckily get 2mb. But to be happy to get a 2mb service is silly when I'm on a package that will boast speeds of up to 8mb. I dont live out in the sticks, either, i live in a major town which is highly populated.

My family live in Blackpool. They just got the new 50mb virgin installed and they get 10mb. They live in a good area of Blackpool and although 10mb may be good, it's nothing like the advertised 50mb they were told.

Instead of advertising "up to" speeds, they should do as BT Business are doing now and promise "Minimum Speeds", so that the rest is just down to good luck.
