Google is looking to broaden its Pixel smartphone line-up, with sources close to the tech giant confirming that a budget version of its Pixel 3 is in the works.
Dubbed the Pixel 3 Lite, it’s been the subject of intense speculation in recent weeks, as Google looks to capitalise on Apple’s struggles and prove itself as a hardware company as well as the makers of the ubiquitous Android platform.
Want the inside line? Here are five things we know so far about the Google Pixel 3 Lite.
Take a look at our selection of deals for the Pixel 3.

1 Camera capabilities in line with pricier Pixel 3 models
Google’s Pixel 3 camera is regarded as one of the very best in the business. And the best news of all is that it’s set to make the transfer across to the Pixel 3 Lite.
That means a single lens, 12.2 megapixel dual–pixel sensor round the back, with optical image stabilisation and a string of AI features designed to help your phone learn about conditions and take better pictures every time.
This should put the Pixel 3 Lite well ahead of rival mid–tier handsets.
2 Expect sizeable screen and ample battery
Like the Pixel 3, the Pixel 3 Lite is due to come with a sizeable 5.5–inch screen.
That’d more than enough for watching the latest shows on Netflix or getting lost down YouTube wormholes on train journeys.
The battery is believed to top out at 2,915mAh, the same as the Pixel 3, with 4GB of RAM to keep things ticking along.
3 Plastic body, no front–facing speaker, no dual front–facing camera
The Lite in the name understandably means that Google is looking to economise in some areas in order to keep prices down.
That means that the Pixel 3 Lite is likely to come with a plastic rather than metal body.
Leaked images suggest there won’t be a front–facing speaker and that the dual lens front camera seen on the standard Pixel 3 is being left out too.
None of these are huge deal breakers if the price is right.

4 An imminent release
According to ‘industry sources’ speaking with Japan’s Nikkei, the new Pixel 3 Lite will be out very soon.
While exact dates aren’t clear, word is that Google wants to quickly boost its hardware range as major rival Apple falters.
The Pixel brand is still very much a niche concern, maybe the Pixel 3 Lite can change that.
5 Cheaper than iPhone XR
The same insiders say that the Pixel 3 Lite will cost less than the £749 iPhone XR.
That suggests it will also cost less than the soon–to–be–released Samsung Galaxy S10e.
A price tag of around £500 would be welcome, especially as that would put it in the same bracket as the excellent OnePlus 6T.
