    All major carriers are offering the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6S at broadly comparable price points and on 24-month and 18-month contract options.

    The chief differentiators between carriers are the coverage in your area and the sort of mobile internet speeds you can expect. As well as sweeteners, of course, such as customer incentives.

    The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 plus are almost identical.

    Both phones feature the same premium build, as well as the same improved camera, more powerful processor and are powered by Apple’s iOS operating system.

    The sole major differences are that the iPhone 6 features a 4.7-inch screen and the iPhone 6 Plus is home to a 5.5-inch display.

    Whilst the former has resolution of 1334x750, the latter’s resolution is 1920x1080.

    At 6.9mm, the iPhone 6 is also slightly slimmer than the iPhone 6 Plus, which comes in at 7.1mm.

    The eight-megapixel iSight camera has been improved to include a new Focus Pixels sensor, as well as better face detection and fast autofocus.

    Video recording has been enhanced with 1080p HD video at 60fps and the option to record 240 fps slow-motion footage at 720p.

    The handset is home to Apple’s A8 processor and M8 motion co-processor.

    The more powerful A8 processor features 64-bit architecture and manages the iPhone 6’s resources, so there’s no slowdown between menus.

    The M8 co-processor measures movement and is at the heart of Apple’s Health app for monitoring wellbeing, as well as the phones' support for the Apple Watch.

    We touched on the resolution and dimensions of the iPhone 6's displays above.

    As well as being larger than earlier iPhones, the iPhone 6, Apple claims they offer more true-to-life colours and higher contrast.

    They're also purported to perform better at wider viewing angles.

    The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6S are the largest iPhones so far.

    With 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch screens respectively, they're the first Apple smartphones to be dubbed 'phablets'.

    This is the term used to describe larger handsets that blur the line between a smartphone and tablet. `

    Both phones are made from aluminium and glass and feature a more curved design that recalls the likes of the iPhone 3GS.

    To try to ensure that the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are still easy to use with one hand, Apple has equipped them with a 'Reachability' mode.

    This brings the apps and features at the upper end of the screen further down the display, so they're easier to access.

    The iPhone 6 offers faster downloads than before over 4G LTE networks, such as EE. They also feature 3x faster connection speeds over WiFi.

    ##New, improved fingerprint security

    As well as using your fingerprint to unlock the phone, with the iPhone 6 you can now use it to buy items from the App Store, iTunes and iBooks.

    That means you won't have to use your password to authenticate purchases.

    ##iPhone 6 operating system

    The iOS 8 software that powers the iPhone 6 is billed as the 'biggest ever iOS release'.

    New additions are the wellbeing app Health, an overhauled Messages app and the QuickType keyboard that aims to make text entry quicker.
