The much-rumoured Amazon tablet could be with us in just over a month’s time, an insider source claims, as the online retail giant looks to leverage its market clout with ebooks and downloads in the nascent slate space.
According to an unnamed component manufacturer cited by DigiTimes, the company’s debut tablet and/or tablets will drop either in August or September in the US and Europe.
Monthly shipments of Amazon tablets, which are thought to run Google’s Android OS, are expected to be in the region of 700,000 to 800,000, the sources said.
To put that in some sort of perspective the Motorola Xoom – also powered by Android – is thought to have shipped just 250,000 units for the whole of the first quarter.
As it stands, Amazon has yet to formally acknowledge it has a tablet in development. However, back in May Jeff Bezos strongly hinted in an interview that one was in the works when he advised analysts and tech types to “watch this space”.
Amazon is seen by many as the company best-placed to challenge the iPad’s supremacy at the top of the tablet tree.
