Channel 4 has announced it is working on a much-improved 4oD application for iOS and Android for early 2013.

A major update to the free, ad-supported catch-up TV app will enable users to stream live TV from Channel 4, Channel 4 +1, E4, More 4 on their smartphones and tablets over cellular and Wi-Fi.

Viewers will also be able to temporarily store programmes on their devices for watching without an active internet connection, say on the tube. Better still, they will be able to pause their content on one device and resume it on another.

4oD growing roster of programmes includes the highly acclaimed Homeland, New Girl and Fresh Meat, boosting an already vast archive of shows available on the on-demand service.

"We're very excited to be the first commercial public service broadcaster in the UK to offer mobile offline viewing, enabling our viewers to catch up with Channel 4 wherever they may be," said Sarah Rose, commercial & business development director at Channel 4.

The upgrade means 4oD will become the first commercial broadcaster in the UK to offer live TV and offline viewing, which is currently only offered by the publicly-funded BBC iPlayer.

Rose added: "The introduction of 'Watch Live' on the move and cross platform 'Pause and Play' is great news for our young-skewing audience who are increasingly watching our content on multiple mobile devices."

The 4oD app is free to download on the App Store and Google Play.
