- Select the right amount of data
The iPhone 17 can come with a range of data options, from 1GB a month to unlimited data.
According to Ofcom, the average person uses around 5.6GB of data per month. Keep this in mind when selecting a data package; no one wants to pay for more data than they need, and not all deals let you roll over unused data.
- Consider how much data storage you’ll need
If you're used to notifications telling you that you've run out of storage, whether you’re planning on taking lots of photos and videos or downloading films from streaming services, then you should opt for an iPhone model with more storage.
The iPhone 17 model has just two storage options: 256GB and 512 GB. Check how much storage you use on your current device, and remember that higher storage models will increase your overall price.

iPhone 17 design
The largest noticeable difference in the design of the iPhone 17 compared with the previous model is the presence of the plateau at the back. This new design feature allows more space for internal components and battery space.
The iPhone 17's screen size has increased to 6.3 inches (compared to 6.1 inches on the iPhone 16), with a thinner border around the screen. It keeps the previous model's Super Retina XDR display, the Dynamic Island, and the ProMotion display.
In addition, the iPhone 17 has gone back to an aluminium casing, which is meant to be lighter than the titanium casing. The updated Ceramic Shield 2 protective cover is now bound to the screen at an atomic level and is three times more scratch-resistant than the previous model.

The iPhone 17's Promotion display has a refresh rate of up to 120Hz, which provides a smooth and efficient video experience and is also perfect for gaming. The new A19 chip and 5-core GRU allow for faster, more efficient display motion.
And on top of the Ceramic Shield 2, the screen is finished with a 7-layer anti-reflective coating.
What AI features does the iPhone 17 have?
Since its introduction earlier this year, Apple Intelligence has expanded with even better visual intelligence and live translation. This means that it’s even better at searching via images and photos and can translate languages in real time as you speak with people.
Simply holding the camera and pointing at an object, Apple’s multimodal AI will analyse the photo and provide search results or other relevant information based on what it “sees.” This can range from reviews of a clothes shop or restaurant to scanning an event flyer and adding it to your calendar.

The iPhone 17 keeps its 48MP Main camera, but this time, it’s paired with yet another 48MP ultra-wide camera.
This Dual Fusion camera system lets you take super-high‑resolution photos at twice the optical quality, and from multiple depths. However, the camera will still default to 24MP for your everyday snaps, as it’s a smaller file size.
The front camera is even cooler. The iPhone 17 debuts with ‘Center Stage’ software, which is Apple’s widest-ever field of view with a twice-as-large sensor. In addition, the sensor is actually square for the first time ever, meaning you won’t have to rotate your phone to change to landscape mode. The sensor uses AI to detect when multiple people are in view, and it will shift automatically. Neat!
Another new feature is the Dual Capture video, which lets you use both cameras at once. This is perfect for filming the action and your reaction simultaneously.
iPhone 17 vs iPhone 16: What's the difference?
In addition to the new shape, a couple of upgrades from the iPhone 16 are worth pointing out.
The screen is slightly larger, at 6.3 inches, and the Always-On display, previously only available on the iPhone Pro Max, is now standard for the iPhone 17.
The updated camera specs—two 48MP cameras and a new ‘Center Stage’ front camera—are worth noting. And everyone loves a long battery life, so the iPhone 17 adds eight extra hours to the possible video playback.
iPhone 17 vs iPhone 17 Pro: What's the difference?
The iPhone 17 Pro model has the same casing, screen, and display features as the non-Pro version, as well as a similar increase in battery size when compared to the previous model.
The Pro version has an extra camera, the 48MP Fusion Telephoto, which allows an 8x zoom and a 40x digital zoom. This means for the first time, all three iPhone cameras are 48MP, which is rather impressive.
The iPhone 17 Pro has better processing, a faster chip (the A19Pro), and an additional core for the GPU. All this power necessitated a new thermal system to sustain the higher performance. In addition to being lighter, the aluminium casing allows for a 20-times better thermal conductivity.

The iPhone 17’s new design, with its prominent plateau at the back, allows for more physical space for the battery. Although we don’t know the exact battery size, we can say that you could experience up to 30 hours of video playback, compared with 22 hours on the iPhone 16.
