The iPhone 17 Pro is more powerful than the standard iPhone 17 but in a smaller frame than the iPhone 17 Pro Max. Thanks to its more advanced camera and superior processor, it’s the ideal handset for anyone seeking better smartphone photography and performance without stepping up to the bigger, pricier iPhone 17 Pro Max.
In order to see what the iPhone 17 Pro can really do, you’re going to need a decent amount of mobile data. Once you’ve worked out the right amount for you and how much you can afford to pay, you can explore a range of deals from providers we work with, such as Vodafone, Sky Mobile, Three Mobile, O2, Tesco Mobile and iD Mobile.
The iPhone 17 Pro was announced on September 9, 2025. Pre-orders started on September 12, and the product shipped on September 19.
To buy without a contract directly from Apple, the 256GB model costs £1,099, the 512GB model costs £1,299, and the 1TB model costs £1,499.
The iPhone 17 Pro has three rear 48MP cameras: a 48MP Fusion Main, a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide, and a 48MP Fusion Telephoto. These high-quality lenses combine to produce stunning photographs.
The camera system features greater optical zoom than last year's iPhone 16 Pro (up to 8x) and new image stabilisation technologies, which should enable closer-up zoom shots and more stable videos and snaps.
The new telephoto camera’s sensor is 56% larger than the previous generation's, resulting in sharper images in bright light and more detailed low-light shots. A new Bright style brightens skin tones and makes for more brilliant colours.
There’s also a new Centre Stage front-facing camera that lets you shoot in portrait or landscape without adjusting the angle of your phone. For group selfies, it uses AI to expand the field of view and include everyone in the shot. You can also shoot with both the front and rear cameras simultaneously, so you can show someone something on a video call without having to turn your phone around.
The iPhone 17 Pro has Apple Intelligence on board. The features are present in nearly every aspect of the phone, from composing text messages and emails to editing photos and taking notes.
It also gains some new AI features courtesy of iOS 26, the latest version of Apple’s mobile operating system. These include the ability to ‘hold’ your place in a phone queue for customer services and then alert you when it’s your turn to speak. It can screen your calls, asking anyone calling from an unknown number why they are calling and using AI to decide whether to let them through.
The iPhone 17 Pro features a more advanced camera and longer battery life compared to the standard iPhone 17.
The standard 17 lacks the telephoto camera and therefore cannot zoom in as close as the 17 Pro. It can’t record videos at as high a frame rate as the Pro, and its microphone is of lower audio quality. The iPhone 17 Pro also lasts an hour longer for video playback (31 hours versus 30).
The 17 Pro also features a more advanced processor and is available with 1TB of storage (the iPhone 17 Pro Max tops out at 512GB). The two phones come in different colour options, and the Pro features a Ceramic Shield back and an aluminium unibody (rather than just an aluminium frame) for enhanced protection.
A new camera bump on the back and new colour schemes (notably the Cosmic Orange) make the iPhone 17 Pro stand out.
The 6.3-inch screen is protected by Ceramic Shield 2, featuring a new coating for 3x better scratch resistance and improved anti-reflectivity to reduce glare and make it easier to see in bright sunlight. The 3,000 nits peak brightness (the highest ever on an iPhone) also helps. Ceramic Shield is also featured on the back of the device, making it four times harder-wearing than the previous model.
The iPhone 17 Pro provides up to 31 hours of video playback before requiring a recharge. That’s certainly impressive, though not as much as the iPhone 17 Pro Max, which lasts 37 hours.
