Money Back support
Money Back is running again through winter from 1 December 2024 until 2027 with events expected throughout the year.
Anyone with a working electricity smart meter can take part. You just need to connect your smart meter to our app and sign up to join.
Joining Money Back
Who can sign up?
Anyone with an electricity smart meter can sign up, no matter which provider they're with. To check you're eligible, make sure you've successfully connected your smart meter to the Uswitch app and can see electricity data insights.
How do I sign up?
Download the Uswitch app and connect your smart meter when prompted.
Then look for a prompt to sign up to the Money Back scheme. You’ll also need to opt in to individual sessions - we’ll notify you about these ahead of time.
Make sure you opt into our push notifications and email so you don't miss out.
Can I join more than one scheme?
You can only be registered with one DFS scheme at a time. If you register for another supplier’s scheme after Money Back then you won't be able to join future Money Back sessions.
If you’re registered with multiple schemes at the time a session takes place then there's a chance you'll be disqualified from earning money with either scheme until you have opted out of the other scheme.
What happens to my data when I sign up?
Your smart meter usage data will be processed by our technology partner to calculate how much you have reduced your consumption. It is also shared with NESO for audit purposes.
Money Back sessions
Do I need to join every session?
We'll notify you about sessions as they come up, and you'll need to opt into these separately.
If you don't, you won't earn anything for that session.
When will the sessions happen?
Sessions are finalised at short notice by NESO, but we will notify you as soon as we find out when the next session is - this might be the same day. The scheme is now ongoing until 2027 so sessions won't just take place during winter months.
Remember to opt in to push notifications and email to make sure you don’t miss an update.
How can I reduce my electricity use?
The aim is to reduce your electricity usage during Money Back sessions in a safe and manageable way.
To do this, try not to use large appliances like your oven, washing machine or tumble dryer. We'd also recommend not opening your fridge or boiling the kettle if you can avoid it.
Take a look at the Save tab in the Uswitch app to get a better understanding of which appliances tend to use the most electricity.
What if I can't reduce my usage?
Don't worry - there are no penalties if you're not able to reduce your electricity usage during a Money Back session. It just means you won't earn anything towards that one.
How can I opt out?
You’ll see a link to opt out of the scheme at the bottom of the Earn tab in the app. Click this and follow the instructions. You can always opt back in later during the scheme if you change your mind.
Why wasn’t I notified about a session?
NESO finalises these sessions at short notice, and we have no control over when they start.
As soon as we find out the start time, we’ll let you know. Remember to opt into our push notification and email in the app so we can notify you as soon as possible.
Earnings and payment
How much can I earn?
NESO determines the earning amount per session and this can vary, but we’ll let you know this before you choose to opt in.
The amount you earn depends on your typical usage during the time periods when the sessions run and how much you reduce your usage by.
We don’t take a cut either - you’ll get the full amount awarded by the NESO.
How do I see how much I've earned?
Look for the Earn tab in the app and you'll be able to see how much you've earned and how many kWh you've reduced your electricity usage by.
It takes a little while for this to be calculated after a session happens so please bear with us - we'll update you when your calculations are ready.
How do you calculate my earnings?
We use an Ofgem-approved methodology (P376) for calculating your 'typical' usage every 30 minutes each day, and we then use that to compare against what you used during a Money Back session. Typically this looks back at your electricity usage during that same time period over 10 previous similar days for weekdays, or 4 weekend days if a session falls on a weekend.
Why are my earnings still calculating?
After a session takes place, NESO needs a few weeks to crunch the numbers and calculate how much you’ve earned.
In the app you should see in the Earn tab that your savings are ‘calculating’ - these will update as soon as we know how much you saved. If you have push notifications turned on then we’ll also alert you when your savings are ready to view.
Why are my earnings different from last time?
The amount per session can vary as this is set by NESO. We’ll let you know the amount before you choose to opt in.
