Three and giffgaff triumph at this year’s uSwitch awards

Boradband and Mobile awards 2017

For the first time ever, the uSwitch Mobile and Broadband Awards were combined to celebrate the very best that the telecoms industry has had to offer in the last year.

The annual awards ceremony, held last night at Quaglino’s in London, saw Three take home six gongs, including Best Pay Monthly Network, Best SIM-Only Network and Online Retailer of the Year.

Three also walked away with the awards for Best Network for Data, Pay Monthly Retailer of the Year and Best Network for Roaming. This last one comes as no surprise given the popularity of its Feel at Home service.

However, the night’s most coveted award, Network of the Year, went to giffgaff for the second year in a row. The carrier, whose service is based on O2’s network infrastructure, also won Best Value SIM-Only Network and Best Network Customer Service.

Tesco Mobile walked away with awards for Best Value Pay Monthly and High Street Retailer of the Year, while O2 won Best Pay As You Go Network and EE won Best Network Coverage. That meant that, once again, Vodafone was the only major carrier to go home empty-handed.

Meanwhile, our panel of expert judges voted Apple as Mobile Manufacturer of the Year, beating less-established phone-makers Huawei, Google and OnePlus. However, it wasn’t all good news for Apple as Samsung’s Galaxy S7 Edge beat the iPhone 7 to take home the award for Mobile Phone of the Year.

Ernest Doku, telecoms expert at, commented on the awards by saying, "Six is the magic number for Three, a deserved multi-award winner for delivering incredible value and huge value-adds such as free roaming in 42 countries.

“Meanwhile, giffgaff’s unbeatable combination of all you can eat data and flexible, no-contract tariffs have re-shaped the mobile landscape and appeal to millennials who either can't get a pay monthly deal or don't want the risk of being tied in.

“Another award-winning MVNO has realised that value doesn’t just mean cheap - Tesco Mobile has delivered a selection of great deals and discounts for the cost-conscious mobile owner.

“With its award-winning S7 Edge, Samsung has overshadowed the blot on its jotter that was the Note 7 with an incredible handset that delivers on looks, features and value for money.

“But Apple stealing the manufacturer prize suggests it has cemented its place in the public consciousness as a purveyor of near-perfect hardware, despite the iPhone 7 being neither evolution or revolution, but rather one of exquisite refinement.”

Plusnet won big for broadband, knocking Sky off the top spot to win three awards. You can see the all of broadband winners here.
