fire tv

The Amazon Fire TV set-top box is now available in the UK. It's been listed as 'coming soon' on the e-tailer's website for a while now, but the £79 device is now shipping.

It's Amazon's answer to Apple TV. Plug it into your TV, hook it up to your Wi-Fi network, and you can enjoy streaming services like BBC iPlayer, Netflix, Spotify, Demand 5 and Sky News.

Of course it also hooks you up to Amazon's selection of films and TV shows to stream. You can rent or buy them, or take the all-you-can eat option and get Amazon Prime Instant Video for £5.99 a month.

Sign up to Amazon Prime for £79 a year, and Prime Instant Video will be thrown in for no extra.

It plays games too, which you can download from the Amazon Appstore. Shell out an extra £34.99, and you can have your very own controller to play them with.

Fire TV comes with its own remote control, which looks quite similar to that bundled with Apple TV. It contains its own microphone for voice-activated search.

As well as Apple TV, Fire TV is up against the likes of Roku and Google Chromecast. Who will win the battle for the lounge this Christmas? Popcorn at the ready, it's going to be quite a show.
