Summer might be coming to us here in the British Isles, but it’s winter in Westeros, as the newest promo for Game of Thrones shows.

While the last teaser used house sigils to indicate the power struggles will continue in season seven, this latest promo gives us a much clearer indication of which families will be duking it out for control of the Iron Throne in the penultimate season of the hit series.

game of thrones series 7 trailer breath

Cersei Lannister is shown walking through King’s Landing and ascending the Iron Throne — which she took control of last season after blowing up the Sept of Baelor and effectively wiping out who she viewed as her biggest competition.

But by focusing all of her attention on King’s Landing, Cersei overlooked her two biggest threats: Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen.

Both Jon and Dany are seen in this newest promo sitting upon their own rightful thrones. Jon is shown sulking through Winterfell, and Dany is walking through a castle we haven’t seen before. According to set rumours, this location is Dragonstone, the ancestral home of the Targaryens.

At the end of the trailer, however, the camera zooms out to show that this struggle is just a glimpse in the eye of the Night King and his army of White Walkers. This reminds us that while the in-fighting between the great houses of Westeros is entertaining, the real battle is between the living and the dead, not the political players of Westeros.

Game of Thrones returns to Sky Atlantic on 17 July and will be shown both in simulcast with the US release at 2am and later at 9pm.
