Apple has already let slip that a 4K Apple TV streaming box is on the way. And now comes more evidence.

References to a 4K HDR model of Apple TV were uncovered in the firmware for Apple's HomePod home speaker. 4K is a format with four times as many pixels as high definition, making for a much sharper image. HDR, meanwhile, stands for high dynamic range, and creates a more lifelike picture with more depth.

The code also reveals references to other varieties of HDR, suggesting that the next Apple TV will be compatible with plenty of TVs from various manufacturers.

Last week, a customer spotted a reference to 4K films in their iTunes purchase history. Which suggests Apple will soon offer them through its online store.

Putting two and two together, the smart money is on 4K films coming to iTunes in the autumn, along with a 4K Apple TV to watch them with.
