Amazon is making a sci-fi series out of the first novel in Iain M. Banks' space opera 'Culture' series.
'Consider Phlebas' will be written by British screenwriter Dennis Kelly (who created the Channel 4 series 'Utopia').
The story takes place during the war between the Culture and the Idiran Empire. Shapeshifting mercenary Horza is hired by the Idirans to find a Culture artificial intelligence that's been shot down and is now hiding on a forbidden world.
Amazon is investing heavily in original content, with a heavy slant towards the sci-fi and fantasy genres. As well as 'Consider Phlebas', it's recently greenlit shows based on 'Ringworld', 'Snow Crash' and – the biggest of them all – J.R.R. Tolkien's 'Lord of the Rings'.
Though its investment looks like small fries compared to Netflix, which is splurging a whopping $8 billion on original content. This year alone, it will release 80 original films.
