Netflix and ESPN Films are making an epic 10-hour documentary about basketball legend Michael Jordan.
The Last Dance will focus on Jordan’s role in the 1990s Chicago Bulls dynasty. Under Jordan, the Bulls won an unprecedented six NBA Championships in the 1990s, three after Jordan returned from retirement.
It will draw on more than 500 hours of previously unseen footage from the Bulls’ sixth championship of the 90s. It will be released in 2019, and will feature the full participation of Jordan.
The director will be Jason Hehir, who previously worked with ESPN on The Fab Five, The ’85 Bears and Andre the Giant.
The move is an unusual one for Netflix, which generally steers clear of sports programming. However, with Jordan a global megastar, and his Nike clothing line still selling all these years after he retired, the series is sure to gain huge viewing numbers.
