Netflix will launch a new anime of genre classic Ghost in the Shell. Called Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045, it will be directed by Shinji Aramaki (Appleseed) and Kenji Kamiyama (Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex).
Netflix announced the news in a tweet.
Ghost in the Shell is a long-running anime franchise that started all the way back in 1989. Originally about a cyborg who worked in a counter-terrorist outfit called Public Security Section 9, it has since been adapted into a number of feature films and TV shows.
Last year, Scarlett Johansson took the lead role in a film adaptation. The film was criticised for ‘whitewashing’ i.e. having white actors play Asian characters.
Given Netflix’s reputation for adhering to source material, this version should prove less controversial. It will premiere in 2020.
