Skype to hit iPhones tomorrow

Skype will finally hit iPhones tomorrow, with the launch of a new application that promises to dramatically cut users’ call costs.

The eBay subsidiary has confirmed the imminent arrival of the app, which will be available to download from the Apple App Store.

Third-party apps that perform comparably to the service have been available to download for some time, but have failed to quell calls for Skype from owners of Apple’s multi-million selling handset.

Scott Durchslang, chief operating officer at Skype, outlined the underlying demand for the VOIP service in an interview he gave prior to the CTIA mobile phone expo in Las Vegas.

He said: "The No. 1 request we get from customers is to make Skype available on iPhone. There's a pent-up demand."

Skype has also announced that an app for BlackBerry mobile phones will arrive in May.

The service has already been confirmed for Nokia handsets and has reportedly been the cause of much concern from carriers who fear that Skype could limit their income from call charges.
