The Apple iPhone
Skype application is on its way to three million downloads, despite only hitting the App Store this month.
According to Skype, some 2.8 million iPhone owners have rushed to download the app, attracted by the prospect of free Skype to Skype calls. Of these, some 280,000 are in the UK.
A spokesman from the company expressed surprise at the level of demand for the app and estimated that around 10 per cent of iPhone owners worldwide now have the application installed on their handset.
He told Pocket-lint: "We knew it was going to be popular, but these figures really back that feeling up.”
iPhone owners can harness the app to make free Skype-to-Skype calls using a wireless broadband connection as well as much cheaper calls to landlines.
A Skype application is soon to be released for BlackBerry handsets and is expected to be similarly in-demand.
