Apple has already confirmed that it will be releasing its own remote control add-on for the iPhone at some point in the future, but third party firm L5 has beat it to the finishing line with its own device and application that allows the smartphone to function as an infrared universal remote.
The app itself is free to download, but if you want to be able to use it you will need to purchase the plug-in transmitter which makes use of the USB port on the iPhone. You can use the add-on to capture the current settings of your existing remotes in your living room and once the app is set up you can use your iPhone to do the work of several remotes at the same time.
The most impressive feature of the app is the fact that you can customise the layout and interface to suit your requirements. This extends to being able to move the buttons around and even deleting those that you do not need.
At the moment there is no release date scheduled for the device itself and no one on the internet has yet been able to get their hands on a copy, so little information about the real-life function of the device is as yet available.
