The Sunday Times is planning to launch its first official application for use on the iPhone and the newly launched iPad tablet computer.
The app's announcement came from editor John Witherow, who also confirmed that the paper is reducing its budget by 10 per cent to maximise its chances of survival.
It is believed that the iPhone app will require a subscription, with those who subscribe to the print version of the paper getting access included in their payments.
As well as launching the app, the Sunday Times and its weekday counterpart are turning their websites into paid-for portals.
Every other major broadsheet newspaper already has its own iPhone app, with the Sunday Times being the last to make the leap onto Apple's platform.
