Apple may be readying brand new cans to be bundled with the iPhone 5, a video purportedly demonstrating a pair of hitherto unseen headphones reveal.
Vietnamese site Tinhte.vn, which has a history of leaking things early, posted a YouTube clip this weekend showcasing the earphones that may or may not be the replacement for the current variety packaged with various iDevices.
While there’s no way to be sure, from the clip, at least, it looks pretty legit, featuring the same sort of minimalist, white aesthetics that have become the hallmark of Apple products. However, unlike the earbud form factor of the current gen headphones, these appear to be the in-ear kind that pop right into your ear canals for a more comfortable fit.
Macrumors kindly translated the voiceover for western ears, giving us a bit more to go on than idle speculation.
According to the demonstrator, the earphones have the appearance of “a horse's head, not like earbuds” and when worn “they have a much smaller profile”.
He added that the cans “have the appearance of a fully integrated, single unit - there's no part that looks like it would come apart - not like earbuds; the integrated design is characteristic of Apple products.”
Sounds pretty neat, right? They look pretty cool, too, I must admit. Most audiophiles will probably agree that the Apple earbuds aren’t particularly great for comfort or sound quality.
With HTC packing in free Beats earphones with a lot of its phones, it makes sense for Apple to step up its game, especially with rumours that it will also be announcing new additions to its iPod touch and nano families.
Whatever the case, we’ll find out soon enough when Apple takes the stage on September 12th – the date it’s expected to officially lift the lid on the new iPhone and possibly the new iPod touch, too.
