Apple has lifted the lid on two new iPhones – the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. And it seems the leaks were on the money.
The iPhone 6 has a 4.7-inch screen, while the iPhone 6 Plus has a 5.5-incher. Which is exactly what the leaks said.
The devices also have the same design as the leaks suggested, with a protruding camera lens on the back.
Both handsets have Retina HD displays. The iPhone 6 has over 2 million pixels, while the iPhone 6 Plus has more than 1 million.
If you think the new sizes could be tricky to use, then don’t worry, Apple has thought about that.
A new feature called “reachability” is here to help. Double tap the Touch ID button, and the screen slides down, so you can reach the top without having to stretch.
The home screen also works in landscape mode for the first time, so no need to keep switching your handset around as you use it.
Both devices are also the slimmest iPhones yet. The iPhone 6 is just 6.9mm slim, while the iPhone 6 Plus is 7.1mm.
To put that in perspective, the iPhone 5S is 7.6mm thick. In other words, these handsets are very slim indeed.
Both also boast better battery life than Apple’s previous phones. On the iPhone 6, you’ll get 11 hours of video watching, and Wi-Fi browsing, while the iPhone 6 Plus gives you 14 hours of HD video playback.
Both handsets let you make calls over Wi-Fi, which should save you a few pennies if you’re not on an unlimited contract.
The new motion coprocessor is the M8, which follows on from the M7. It features a barometer, which – while not exactly new to phones – will measure elevation, so you can see how many stairs you walked up.
Image-wise, we’re looking at an 8-megapixel camera with a true-tone flash, 1.5 micron pixels, 2.2 aperture, and a phase-detection autofocus that’s twice as fast as previous models.
The front-facing camera can also take burst selfies, which means you should get at least one decent one.
The iSight camera lets in 80 per cent more light, and now has a single shot HDR mode.
The rear camera has also been rejigged. It now has advanced face detection and “best shot” mode.
Again, we’ve seen these modes before on rival handsets.
You can pre-order both from September 12 – that’s this Friday. They’ll be delivered and in store from September 19.
Both come in gold, silver and grey. The iPhone 6 starts at $199 for the 16GB in the US, then $299 for the 64GB, and $399 for the 128GB. The iPhone 6 Plus prices are $299, $399 and $499 for the same capacities.
The iPhone 5C and 5S will stay on sale, which is good news if you want to pick up a smaller handset on the cheap.
