Following months of speculation, Apple officially launched the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus this evening. And with facial recognition security smarts, wireless charging and an impressive camera, it looks like they’ve been worth the wait.

Although Apple’s tenth anniversary handset, the iPhone X, stole the show tonight, the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus will no doubt be instant hits with fans wanting a 2017 upgrade without the eye-watering price tag.

In keeping with measurements from recent years, the iPhone 8 is 4.7 inches, while the bigger 8 Plus measures 5.5-inches, the same as last year's 7 and 7 Plus.

But size isn't everything. And there’s plenty under the bonnet to make the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus much more than a minor upgrade on last year’s models.

Both the iPhone 8 and the iPhone 8 Plus can be charged wirelessly. So, instead of having to charge your phone with a wire, you can put it on the charging plate and boost the battery.

iPhone 8 portrait mode

After last year’s iPhone 7 Plus won rave reviews for its innovative dual-lens camera, it’s no surprise that Apple has upped its photography game even more. Both the iPhone 8 and the 8 Plus come with a bunch of new features designed to help you get professional-looking photos with minimal effort.

There's a new Portrait mode to let you adjust the lighting, and there's improved tech on the front camera too, so you can take stunning selfies every time.

As expected, the iPhone 8 Plus comes with even more appeal to all those dedicated Instagrammers out there.

As with last year's 7 Plus, the 8 Plus comes with a dual-lens camera, designed to let in more light, giving your photos greater depth and sharper colours, even in low light.

The most exciting new feature of the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus, though, is the augmented reality. It uses the phone's camera to overlay graphics onto real-world scenes.

So, you could be playing a game on your phone and it will look like there are helicopters flying round your living room. At a sports match, and it can tell you more about the players on the pitch.

Or if you're taking a photo, you can make it look like a dinosaur is chasing your brother. Endless possibilities.

While there’s been no word on pre-order prices yet, you can expect the networks to start announcing deals over the next few days. So be sure to check back with us then.
