BT has unveiled two new broadband deals designed to cater for university students living in shared accommodation.

The home phone and broadband packages are available on nine-month contracts, meaning students do not have to pay for services if their houses are vacant in the summer.

BT says students typically only require internet and calls from October - when the academic year starts - to June - when they sit their exams.

Both broadband deals offer an unlimited monthly usage allowance, which is ideal given that student houses tend to have multiple internet users.

The nine-month ADSL option is BT Unlimited Broadband, with Unlimited Weekend Calls, which offers up to 16Mb download speeds, unrestricted usage and inclusive weekend calls.

Subscribers are required to pay £16 per month plus line rental for nine months.

Students seeking fibre broadband can sign up for BT Unlimited Infinity 1 with Unlimited Weekend Calls, which is priced at £20 per month plus line rental.

The broadband deal offers download speeds of up to 38Mb, alongside unlimited data and inclusive weekend calls.

Customers receive a Home Hub 4 router with each broadband package, allowing students to access the internet on their laptops and mobile devices anywhere in the house.

All subscribers will have access to the recently-launched BT Sport channels, which are available to BT broadband subscribers free of charge.

They can enjoy all the live action on BT Sport 1, BT Sport 2 and ESPN using the online player or BT Sport app.

If customers decide to sign up for BT pay-TV services along with their broadband, the channels will be available on their television via a YouView set-top box.

Pete Oliver, Commercial Director for BT Consumer, predicted the new BT nine-month broadband packages "will be really popular with students".

"No usage caps and no download limits and we won’t slow you down – unlike Virgin Media. You can download, stream and game as much as you like and there won’t be any unexpected charges at the end of the month," he stated.

"And they’re fantastic value with the Hub 4 included, free access to BT Sport online or with the app, access to BT Wi-Fi at five million UK hotspots, online storage with BT Cloud and the ability to save money on mobile calls with our SmartTalk app."
