Contrary to popular belief women aren’t ‘better’ drivers. But there’s no escaping it – women generally make fewer, less expensive claims. Claims by women drivers tend to be for minor bumps and scrapes as opposed to expensive write offs.

Plus, statistically, women drivers have significantly lower mileage than their male counterparts. The lower your annual mileage, the cheaper your car insurance premium.

Women also tend to drive more cautiously than men, incurring fewer speeding fines and endorsements.

The bottom line is that women are less likely than men to make an expensive claim, so car insurance companies have developed specialised insurance for female drivers.

Unfortunately, there’s no similar type of cheap car insurance for men but there are ways that men can still benefit from insurers favourable treatment of their wife/girlfriend/aunt. Being a named driver on a woman’s insurance policy can often be cheaper than having your own, so it’s worth looking into what’s available. If you do have your own policy, it sometimes helps to have a female partner as an additional driver, as this can bring your premium down.

Although women are, at present, classed as safer drivers with fewer high cost claims than men, there is evidence that women are becoming increasingly aggressive behind the wheel and more susceptible to road rage and competitive driving. They’re also driving longer distances. However, until this information becomes available as an official government statistic, insurers can legitimately continue to offer women lower insurance premiums.
