The Warm Home Discount is a one-time £140 rebate against your energy bills for those eligible.
As a rule, any energy supplier with more than 250,000 customers must offer the scheme to the core group eligible for it, but some smaller suppliers who do not meet that criteria voluntarily participate.

What is the Warm Home Discount?
The Warm Home Discount was established by the government with the aim of helping people at risk from fuel poverty in the UK.
The discount can be given directly or indirectly. For example, many customers eligible for the Warm Home Discount could get a direct rebate of £140, which could go some way to making energy bills a little more affordable.
Some energy suppliers offer a Warm Home Discount indirectly by providing customers with the services of a third party to help reduce the cost of your energy. Indirect Warm Home Discounts are also known as Industry Initiatives. They can be taken up even if your energy supplier does not participate in the Warm Home Discount scheme.
Two types of Warm Home Discount:
- Direct: Money off your energy bill - usually £140
- Indirect: Support from a third party specialising in cutting energy bills - also known as Industry Initiatives
How does the Warm Home Discount work?
In order to get the Warm Home Discount you must buy your energy from a supplier participating in the scheme. Not all energy suppliers are part of the Warm Home Discount.
However, if your energy comes from a non-Warm Home Discount supplier you might still be able to benefit from the indirect Warm Home Discount provided through Industry Initiatives that allows customers to save on their energy bills by providing support from third parties specialising in tackling fuel poverty.
To get the Warm Home Discount you must also meet certain eligibility requirements and be considered at risk of or living in fuel poverty.
Am I eligible for a Warm Home Discount?
First of all, to get a direct discount on your bills you must buy your energy from a supplier participating in the Warm Home Discount scheme.
Secondly, you must meet the eligibility criteria for one of the two categories in the scheme. These are the Core Group and Broader Group. The Core Group is aimed at eligible pensioners and the Broader Group is aimed at those in or at risk of fuel poverty.
Eligibility criteria for the Warm Home Discount Core Group
The Core Group is designed for pensioners. To be eligible for the Warm Home Discount as part of the Core Group, you must have the following:
- Energy supplied by a provider participating in the Warm Home Discount
- You or your partner's name on the energy bill
- You receive the "Guarantee Credit" element of the Pension Credit
The Department for Work and Pensions usually identifies eligible Core Group customers automatically. Those who are eligible for the Warm Home Discount will usually receive a letter in the autumn or winter telling you either:
- That you don't have to apply for the Warm Home Discount, because it will be applied automatically
- That you have to apply by the end of January the following year. The letter will provide details on how to do this
Customers eligible for the Warm Home Discount usually receive their letters by the middle of December.

Broader Group eligibility criteria for the Warm Home Discount
As the name suggests, the Broader Group category of the Warm Home Discount encompasses a wider range of people and circumstances.
The Broader Group discount on your energy bills is only eligible with energy suppliers who are obligated to participate in the Warm Home Discount Scheme. If your energy supplier voluntarily participated in the scheme then you would not be eligible under the Broader Group category.
To know if you're eligible for the Warm Home Discount you should read the Scheme Guidance on the Ofgem website as the criteria can be based on a variety of factors, and participating compulsory Warm Home Discount suppliers have some discretion in modifying some of the eligibility criteria to suit their customers’ needs.
According to Ofgem, some examples of applicable criteria could include being:
- In receipt of Universal Credit, or in work or self- employed and on a total household annual income of less than £16,190 and one of the following applies:
- You are in receipt of a limited capability for work element
- You are in receipt of a disabled child element
- You are responsible for a child under the age of 5 who ordinarily resides with you
Industry Initiatives on the Warm Home Discount
Industry Initiatives are an alternative to the direct rebate that the Warm Home Discount provides. They are essentially an indirect way of benefiting from the Warm Home Discount.
Industry Initiatives target wider groups of fuel poor customers and their programmes usually involve advice on energy saving and help with reducing energy debts.
Not all suppliers will have Industry Initiatives, but you do not necessarily need to buy your energy from a participating Warm Home Discount supplier to benefit.
What happens to my Warm Home Discount if I switch suppliers?
Although switching your energy supplier is a simple and effective way of reducing your bills, you should check your supplier's rules regarding the Warm Home Discount and switching.
If you have already received the discount, then you could be fine to switch suppliers. But if you're still waiting for it, then there could be complications in switching supplier, and you could risk not receiving your discount.
