With the standard iPhone 18 model not expected to launch until 2027, the iPhone 18 Pro looks set to become the new go-to model in the iPhone family. But with a new processor, variable aperture camera and bigger battery than its predecessor, it’s still tipped to be every inch a Pro model.
It runs on the new A20 Pro chip, built using 2-nanometre technology, with Apple claiming faster CPU, GPU and on-device AI performance than before. The iPhone 18 Pro also introduces a new variable-aperture camera, giving you more control over light and depth of field. That should make the biggest difference in low light, group shots and more creative photo or video work.

How does the iPhone 18 Pro compare to previous models?
Compared with the iPhone 17 Pro, the iPhone 18 Pro appears to be a meaningful upgrade rather than a complete redesign. The biggest changes are inside: the new A20 Pro chip, improved thermal design, longer battery life and a more advanced camera system with variable aperture.
If you’re using an iPhone 16 Pro or older, you should notice a bigger step up in sustained performance, camera flexibility and battery life. If you already have an iPhone 17 Pro, the decision likely comes down to how much you value the new camera controls, Siri AI features, and extra battery life.
iPhone 18 Pro camera
The iPhone 18 Pro’s headline camera upgrade is its new 48MP Fusion main camera with variable aperture. The aperture can be adjusted depending on the scene, opening wider in darker environments to let in about 50% more light, or narrowing to achieve greater depth of field in shots like group photos.
Apple has also added Pro Controls for manual settings, including white balance, histogram, aperture and shutter speed. For video, the iPhone 18 Pro supports cinematic-style effects from regular video after capture, 4K Dolby Vision time-lapse and updated AudioMix features.
Performance and battery
The iPhone 18 Pro uses Apple’s new A20 Pro chip, which Apple says brings faster CPU, GPU and AI performance. It also has a redesigned thermal system with a larger vapour chamber, designed to improve sustained performance during demanding tasks like gaming, video work and on-device AI.
Apple claims the iPhone 18 Pro offers up to 36 hours of video playback on eSIM-only models, or up to 24 hours per charge, according to its real-world battery model.
It also supports faster wired charging, reaching up to 50% charge in around 15 minutes.
Apple Intelligence and Siri AI
The iPhone 18 Pro is built around Apple Intelligence and the new Siri AI. Siri can use personal context across apps, answer questions about what’s on screen, take actions in apps and help with writing or editing in places where you type.
Siri AI is rolling out in English beta first, with French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish support expected in October. Some features may have usage limits because they rely on server-based models.
