iPhone 18 Pro Max camera
The iPhone 18 Pro Max has a familiar three-camera setup, but this time features Apple’s new 48MP Fusion main camera with variable aperture. The aperture can open wider in darker environments to let in about 50% more light, or narrow its scope for better depth of field in shots like group photos.
There are also new Pro Controls for manual camera settings, including white balance, histogram, aperture and shutter speed. For video, there are cinematic-style effects applied to regular video after capture, 4K Dolby Vision time-lapse, and updated AudioMix features.
Performance and battery
The iPhone 18 Pro Max runs on the new A20 Pro chip, built using 2-nanometre technology. Apple says it has a faster CPU, more powerful 7-core GPU and dual Neural Engine for better on-device AI performance.

Apple says the iPhone 18 Pro Max offers up to 45 hours of video playback on eSIM-only models and up to 30 hours per charge, based on its real-world battery model. It also supports faster wired charging, reaching up to 50% charge in around 15 minutes.
Apple Intelligence and Siri AI
The iPhone 18 Pro Max supports Apple Intelligence and the new Siri AI. Apple says Siri can understand personal context across apps, answer questions about what’s on screen, take action in apps and help with writing or editing wherever you type.
Siri AI was launched in English on 14 September 2026, with French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish support coming as part of iOS 27.2 in October 2026.
What’s new on the iPhone 18 Pro Max?
Compared with the iPhone 17 Pro Max, the iPhone 18 Pro Max focuses on better performance, longer battery life and more camera control. It's less a dramatic redesign and more of a refinement of what's come before.
The introduction of the variable-aperture camera and pro controls will give keen photographers a real boost to creative control and let you capture even better photos in a variety of lighting conditions.
Is it worth upgrading to the iPhone 18 Pro Max?
If you have an iPhone 17 Pro Max or an iPhone 16 Pro Max, the upgrade is modest. The variable aperture does give keen photographers more creative control, but if you’re not regularly shooting close-ups or working with tricky lighting, you won’t feel the jump up as much.
For anyone moving up from an iPhone 14 or older, upgrading to the iPhone 18 Pro Max is more worthwhile. You’ll feel the gains in battery life, camera tech and Apple Intelligence.
