Guide to credit cards

Don’t just pick any card – find out which card offers the right deal for you on uSwitch.com

Find the best credit card

I want the best credit card!

There is, actually, no such thing as 'the single best credit card', as it really depends on you, and how you use it. So, the best credit card for you is not the same as the best credit card for your mum or your best friend. Or anyone.

How do you use your credit card?

We are all different, especially when it comes to money. Do you max out your credit card on new clothes and CDs and then try as hard as possible to ignore the debt, just paying the minimum amount each month?

Or, do you want a credit card so that every now and again you can book a flight or ticket on the internet, and then pay the full amount off as soon as you can?

I want to buy stuff every now and again

Just how much spending do you plan to do? If you just want a credit card to make the odd purchase here or there, or as a buffer in case you run out of money, then you might not care so much about the interest rate. Especially as all cards have an interest free period. The best credit card for you might be an affinity card linked to your favourite football team or charity. Or it might say important words like 'platinum' or 'gold'.

I want to spend, spend, spend

If you think you will rely on credit and just make the minimum repayments each month, then the best credit card for you would have a low interest rate and perhaps a long interest-free period to keep your payments down.

Or, maybe you make lots of purchases on your credit card, but pay the balance in full every month. Then, like the low spender, you won't be concerned about the interest rate, but your best credit card could be one that offers reward points or cashback.

I want to consolidate my debts

Do you have debt spread across different credit cards? You can probably save money by doing a credit card balance transfer. The best credit card for you will be one with a low or interest free introductory rate on balance transfers.

The typical interest rate should also be good, unless you intend to move your debt around constantly or pay the full balance during the introductory period.

So, why not use our free comparison calculator and find the best credit card for your needs?
