Between now and 2012 the UK is switching to digital TV. uSwitch looks at what you can do to prepare for the digital switchover.

What is the digital switchover?

The digital TV switchover is the process of converting the UK's old analogue TV signal to a new digital one. The digital switchover is a government initiative and means that almost everyone in the UK will be able to take advantage of the benefits offered by digital TV.

How will the digital switchover affect me?

The digital switchover will mean:

  • Better TV reception and picture and sound quality
  • More channels and interactive features
  • More people will be able to receive digital TV services
  • More services available like high definition TV.

When will the digital switchover affect me?

To ensure as little disruption as possible analogue transmitters are being switched off one by one throughout the country. This means that when you need to become fully digital will depend on where you live in the country.

This map will give you a basic idea of when your area is switching over to digital. You will receive a specific date nearer your switchover time.

How can I prepare for the digital switchover?

Different households will need to do different amounts of preparation for the digital switchover - for some it will be as easy as plugging in a new set top box - while others may need to change their aerial.

To be able to watch TV after switchover you will need to check that you have converted or upgraded your TV equipment to receive the digital TV signal. You don't have to buy a new TV - almost all TVs can be converted by connecting a digital box.

You will also need a digital TV service - some can be received free (after any initial set-up costs), such as Freeview and Freesat. If you opt for Freeview, you may need to replace your aerial and Digital UK can help you check.  Cable and satellite TV services like Virgin Media and Sky may require a subscription.
