What is digital TV?
Digital TV is a way of transmitting the pictures and sound that make up a TV programme, together with other services like text and interactivity. The information needed to make up the TV programme is 'coded' into a digital stream of ones and noughts – giving a superior image quality.
What can digital TV do for you?
What this means in reality is that the image quality you are used to on your computer screen will now be replicated on your TV – your TV image will be up to 10 times better, with 10 times more pixels on the screen with digital precision. Plus, the digital stream takes up much less capacity in the airwaves, so that the space needed in the past for just one analogue channel can now carry six or seven different channels. Many of your favourite programmes are in true widescreen on digital channels - something analogue TV cannot replicate properly.
What to look out for
In addition to the improved picture quality and programme range, you’ll need to decide what you are looking for in a digital TV package:
- finding the cheapest possible deal with a basic channel selection from traditional broadcasters
- being able to pause and record the programme you are watching or another channel
- getting a digital TV in more than one room
- one that provides high definition digital TV with the appropriate TV set
- being able to send email via your TV
- getting a deal that includes broadband or home phone
- being able to watch the week’s best shows on demand
- having a greater selection of films
- not being tied into a contract
- creating a custom made selection of subscription programmes
