Can I stick with my old supplier when I move house?

Yes, you can stick with your old gas and electricity supplier when you move house - all you have to do is contact them and let them know that you're moving and want to stay with them.  Make sure that they understand that you want to take your current energy plan with you to your new property, otherwise they may treat the request as a switch and place you on their standard plan when you move.

However, remember that the plan that was a good deal for your old house might not be a such a good deal in your new home - energy prices differ between areas, and if you're moving to a larger, smaller, older or newer property etc the amount of energy you use will change too, which can have on impact on which plan will be cheapest for you. Therefore, it's a good idea to compare prices, just to be sure.

Can I just leave the gas and electricity supply as it is?

Yes, once you've registered yourself as the new occupier with the energy company that supplies the house, you don't have to do anything else if you don't want to. However, this can be a very expensive option, as you are likely to be on a standard tariff, rather than one of the cheaper plans on offer. Even if you stick with the supplier for a few weeks while you get settled, you should do a comparison sooner rather than later, to make sure you're getting the best deal.

What if my new property has a prepayment meter?

If your new property has a prepayment meter installed, you need to decide if you would like to keep it or have a standard credit meter installed. If you keep the prepayment meter you can still switch your energy plan via uSwitch, but prepayment is the most expensive method of paying for your energy. If you would like to have a standard credit meter installed, contact the current energy supplier and arrange an installation date through them. Providing you are not in debt to the energy company, this shouldn't be difficult to organise.
