Just in time for Christmas, Sky has completely changed all of its TV packages, pricing and structures. Now, customers can add and remove flexible 31-day add-ons for features like HD, Box Sets and Sky Kids whenever they like.
Previously, Sky offered 18-month TV contracts for Original, Variety and Box Sets bundles, with Variety incorporating documentaries, music and kids content, and Box Sets offering all of the above, plus over 350 box sets available on demand. Original was typically offered for £22 per month, Variety’s standard pricing was £32 per month and Box Sets came in at £38 per month.
With Sky’s new Sky Entertainment offering, new customers sign up for the Sky Entertainment pack, which includes all the same channels as the former Original bundle, plus the documentary and music channels from Variety. Sky Entertainment costs £20 per month for the duration of the 18-month contract — which is a price cut off of Original whilst offering additional channels.
On top of that, customers can add in 31-day flexible packs for HD (£5 per month for 42 HD channels), Box Sets (£5 per month for over 350 box sets available on-demand) and Sky Kids (£5 per month for 11 dedicated channels and over 4,500 on-demand TV episodes). Multiscreen is £12 per month and can be added and removed on a 31-day basis, and there are no changes to Sky Cinema or Sky Sports.
Depending upon which bundle you were previously signed up to, this is likely to save you money. For Box Sets, for example, if you were paying £38 per month for an 18-month contract, it would have cost you £684 over the duration of the contract.
Under the new model, you would now be paying £35 per month for the same package (Entertainment plus the add-ons of Box Sets, Sky Kids and HD), which would cost £630 for the full 18-month contract at most. Remember: These are flexible add-ons to add and remove as you like, so you can cancel during months when you’re busy, then re-add once you have free time again. If you only want to add Box Sets for a three months in the summer or over the winter holidays, for example, this contract price would drop by £70.
Currently, this new structure is only available for new customers; however, the changes will be rolled out across the board for current customers to recontract next year, which may lead to price cuts.
These changes come off the back of a banner year for Sky. Over the course of 2017, Sky revamped their Sky Sports package to offer more flexibility, and the company also introduced its Sky VIP rewards scheme. These changes were the result of extensive customer research by Sky, which revealed the top three priorities for customers: flexibility, rewarding loyalty and value for money.
