[Video] Virtual tour: See how full fibre networks work

The future of broadband relies on the rollout of full fibre networks, which will connect homes and businesses to the fastest available broadband services.

But how do these services actually work, and what makes them faster than what we already have? If you’re curious to see the inner workings of the UK’s growing full fibre network, here are a couple of videos you might be interested in.

Virtual tour of CityFibre

You may have heard mention of things like ultrafast broadband and gigabit internet, with major providers like BT and Virgin Media investing heavily in their infrastructure in key areas in the UK.

One name you may not have heard of is CityFibre, is one of the UK’s largest digital infrastructure platforms, and the largest alternative provider of wholesale fibre network infrastructure.

The so-called “builder of Gigabit Cities” hosts broadband providers like Vodafone’s Gigafast connections, as well as TalkTalk Business, SSE and many more.

CityFibre providers

Though nowhere near as detailed (or as long) as Openreach’s explainer video, CityFibre’s recently-posted “virtual walk-through” video gives an interesting view of the inner workings of its new full fibre broadband network.

The gigabit internet provider shows a somewhat basic but interesting look at the technology that is planning to be deployed to nearly eight million UK homes by the end of 2025 at a cost of £4bn.

Virtual tour of Openreach

Openreach is still the UK’s largest telecommunications network, hosting broadband and landline services of a number of different companies including BT, Sky, NOW Broadband and TalkTalk.

Openreach, which is owned byBT Group, posted this extensive video several months ago which gives you an engineer’s eye-view of how their gigabit-capable broadband works. The video details how Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network is delivered to your home.

Be warned, the video is about an hour long and it gets very technical. You can also skip the first three minutes of introductions and PR gloss. The full video includes a pretty comprehensive overview of the network, with narration from Regional Learning Manager in Bradford, Dominic Bottomley.
