Samsung Galaxy S2 sees off iPhone 4S in Xmas market

Samsung’s Galaxy S2 has once again trumped the iPhone 4S for sales and search volume,’s Mobile Tracker reveals, as the best-selling Android kit stayed at the top spot for the eight consecutive month.

The S2’s success, which came amid similarly high placings for other Galaxy branded phones in the monthly survey, means it is confirmed as 2011’s biggest-selling handset on uSwitch.

The iPhone 4S retained second place in the monthly run-down for December, followed by the mid-range Android number the Samsung Galaxy Ace, the HTC Wildfire S and the ageing, but still in-demand iPhone 4.

And rounding off a top ten, in which the recently released Nokia Lumia 800 and HTC Sensation XE were noticeable and telling absentees, were the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, the original HTC Sensation, the tablet-cum-smartphone that is the Samsung Galaxy Note, the Samsung Galaxy S and the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S.

Commenting on developments, Ernest Doku, technology expert at, said: “Reviewing 2011, it was an outstanding year for Android phones, which dominated the most popular handset chart.

"Samsung in particular beat off a strong challenge from the iPhone 4S to secure the Christmas No. 1 spot, with the Galaxy S2 in the smartphone sales chart.

"Disappointingly, RIM’s new BlackBerry offerings failed to be enough of a differentiator from the old range to make a mark, while Apple devices, old and new, confirmed their enduring appeal by holding ground in the charts.”

Doku added: “Looking ahead to 2012, we’re likely to see a competitively priced sequel to the Nokia Lumia Windows Phone and further efforts from manufacturers for quality over quantity, rather than a plethora of identikit Android phones.

“Similarly to the successes of 2011, punters will have to be wowed with flagship phones in order to open their wallets.”

Sales of the iPhone 4S are thought to have been strongly impacted by stock shortages, especially in its first month of release.
