The iPhone 4S has finally knocked the Samsung Galaxy S2 off the top of uSwitch Mobile Tracker, calling time on Sammy’s blower almost year-long supremacy.
The 20 million-selling S2 has topped the tracker, which takes into account sales and search volumes across a network of comparison sites, for the last 11 months.
But today, a somewhat tardy six months after it first landed on shop shelves, the iPhone 4S has finally ended the S2’s dominance to claim the top spot.
Tempering the disappointment for Samsung, though, is that its more au courant smartphone challenger is continuing to defy expectations.
The Galaxy Note, whose half-phone, half-tablet form factor saw it written off by many as a niche device, is nestling at number four in the chart.
That's just behind the recently released HTC One X in third – a placing HTC might’ve expected to have improved on given the handset’s huge advertising spend and lavish spec sheet.
Ernest Doku, technology expert at uSwitch, said: “After ruling the roost for 11 consecutive months, it will be a bitter blow for Samsung that they couldn’t maintain the number-one spot for an entire year.
“The Galaxy S 2 has been a worthy and enduring bestseller, significantly undercutting the iPhone on pay monthly whilst providing a close parity of features, but official word surrounding an imminent sequel has really slowed sales this month."
Doku also noted the imminent release of the next Galaxy phone, informally dubbed the S3, could mean a rapid return to the top for Samsung.
He said: “If the current buzz is anything to go by, the next Samsung Galaxy phone could really make a strong impact on the May charts, from pre-order interest alone. This is without a doubt the most excited we’ve ever seen consumers over a non-Apple device.”
Other phones to enjoy strong showings in April's Mobile Tracker were the evergreen Samsung Galaxy Ace, HTC One S and Sony Xperia S, which took positions fix, six and seven respectively.
Completing the top ten is the iPhone 4 at eight and the HTC Wildfire S and Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S at nine and ten.
