Samsung Galaxy S4: source revives rumours of Q1 launch

Rumours that the Samsung Galaxy S4 will land in a matter of months got fresh legs today, despite an earlier, semi-official denial from the phone-maker that the handset is due any time soon.

For months, speculation has been rife that Samsung’s next flagship smartphone could debut at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) next month or even as early as this week's Consumer Electronics Show.

The hopes of would-be S4 owners took something of a dent last week, however, when Samsung’s Lebanon division told a customer that the phone “will not be released before May 2013”.

Hmm, that seems pretty official, above-board and cut and dried, no? Not necessarily. At least not after a “well-known accessory-maker” cited by Gotta Be Mobile told the site that he still expects the Samsung Galaxy S4 to “launch at some point in the first quarter".

So what to deduce from this?

Well, assuming he’s correct – and that’s a pretty big assumption to make – and a Q1 release is a goer, we still don't expect the S4 to arrive until March at the earliest. That's because past form tells us that if it really was imminent, there would have been much more to go on right now in the way leaks and activity from the Samsung supply chain.

Furthermore, we’d be extremely surprised if Samsung opts for a trade show such as MWC to launch its product, where it would be forced to share the limelight with rival devices. Far more likely is that, as with the S3 before it, the S4 will be unveiled at a special one-off event – all the better to snare as many tech column inches as possible.

Specs for the phone are a still matter of conjecture. However, reports suggest it will sport an Exynos 5450 Quad-Core CPU, Android 4.2.1 out of the box, a 4.99-inch Super AMOLED FULL HD display and a 13-megapixel camera.
